BAPTO Charity Event Raises £1,350!
This year, BAPTO introduced a mixed doubles charity trophy to help raise money for local good causes. The stunning trophy was kindly donated by Don and Martin Mills and has been appropriately named after the loyal BAPTO pool-playing duo. Half the entrance money was donated to the chosen good cause whilst the other half was paid out in prize money. A total of 29 pairs entered the event with Eric Mohammed & Cath King beating Clive Ebbrell & Amanda Watson 3-2 in a close final. All matches consisted of 5 frames played to a 'Davies Cup' format.
To help raise additional funds, well-known names in industry kindly donated prizes for a charity raffle, which raised £800. We would like to give a big thanks to Craftmans Cues, Peradon, Sam Leisure, BCE, Geordie Pool, Aramith, Hainsworth, Cue & Case Co, Homegames, Lyons Robin Hood and Greenhalgh Trophy for donating some fantastic prizes that helped sell all the tickets. This year the money will go to two good causes, 'Fort Alice' refuge for people suffering domestic abuse and 'Phoenix' performing arts school for disabled or disadvantaged children. This award is in loving memory of Amy Barnes, aged 19, a tireless helper for these worthy charities. Amy's dad Andrew Barnes presented the trophy during the presentation ceremony.
This new trophy intends to raise money for the smaller struggling .good causes., where they will directly benefit from funds raised. In 2010 the players will be invited to submit their suggestions for supporting their preferred 'good cause'.

2009 BAPTO Finals Busiest Ever!
The 'BAPTO Grand Pool Finals' weekend is Britain's longest established pool competition, exclusively provided for amateur pub pool teams. This is the association's 33rd annual final, held from 12th to 15th Nov 2009, with the first being held way back in 1977. The last few years has seen the event rapidly grow in popularity and this year over 100 teams competed for a number of prizes including the new charity mixed doubles trophy.
This year the event was almost cancelled due to the unforeseen closure of Pontins holiday camp in Blackpool. Luckily the event was successfully moved to a new home in Rhyl North Wales, only several weeks before the event was due to start. BAPTO would like to thank Lyons Robin Hood for accommodating the competition at such short notice and also thank the loyal players and guests for their continued support with the relocation. Lyons and their magnificent staff pulled out all the stops to make sure the competition went ahead smoothly and the players felt welcomed. There were two playing arenas with 16 SAM tables in each, covered in Hainsworth Match cloth and were complemented by Aramith Premier Tournament balls, giving players the highest standard in playing conditions. Lyons converted their main arcade into Arena 2 complete with a bar and flat screen TV's just for the event.
2009 results for the main team event, 'Skinner and the 4 Skins' (pictured) from Edmonton beat 'McCluskeys' from Derby 6-3 in a terrific final. The team plate trophy saw 'Woadmans Arms' from Wisbech narrowly beat 'Wickford A' from Essex 6-5 in a truly nail biting match. The Men's 2009 Champion is Jamie Tudor and runner up is Matt Goodale. The Ladies 2009 Champion is Sue Pilling who beat Marie Polledri. The first mixed doubles trophy champions are Eric Mohammed & Cath King who beat Clive Ebbrell & Amanda Watson 3-2 in a close finals match.
BAPTO would like to thank the sponsors for providing the highest quality playing experience to the UK's longest standing pool tournament.
